Grilling is a favorite outdoor activity for many people. It’s a great way to bring the family together for some delicious food. However, there are more injuries in summer and fall from cookouts. When you practice grilling safety, you can reduce the risk of accidents and keep everyone safe.

Setting Up the Grill Safely

The area where you set up your grill matters for grill safety. Setting a grill on uneven ground is unsafe because it could fall over and burn someone or start a fire. As an extra precaution, place a non-flammable mat under the grill that’s made specifically for this purpose.

This will protect whatever surface the grill is on from burning embers that might fall. Keep the grill at least 15 feet away from structures, railings, and trees for grilling safety.

Inspect the Grill Before Using

Pay attention to the condition of your grill before you fire it up. If your charcoal grill is worn and showing holes or cracks in the bottom, it’s time to buy a new one.

Check gas grill connections for leaks. This is easily done by applying a soap and water solution to the outside of the hose and turning the gas on. If the liquid bubbles, there is gas leaking out of the hose. Do not use the grill until it’s repaired and leak-free.

What to Wear for Grilling Safety

Wearing the right clothes when grilling makes the activity safer. Wear short or tight sleeves so they won’t dangle into the flames. If you have an apron on, make sure the strings are wrapped up and tightly tied for the same reason.

Safe Practices While Grilling

One of the most important grilling safety tips is to never leave the grill unattended. If you have young kids, keep them from running around too close to the grill. They don’t understand how hot it is and might try to touch it out of curiosity. Stay on alert from the time you light the grill until it cools down.

Grilling Safety Means Cleaning the Grill

Give the grill a good cleaning after every use once it has cooled down completely. Put ashes in a metal container for disposal. Scrub the grates of grease and food particles. If the grill doesn’t get cleaned, the grease might flare up next time you grill. Also, your food is more sanitary and healthy when it is cooked on a clean grill.
