Your home’s guttering system channels rainwater away from areas where it can cause extensive damage. Clogged gutters overflow, and water seeps beneath the roofing and into the walls. Your home’s basement may flood, and you might develop problems with mold. Clean the gutters every six months, preferably in spring and early fall. For this, you need sturdy gloves, a ladder, a hand trowel, a bucket, and a garden hose.
Caulk the Bathtub
Another maintenance task any homeowner can do is checking the bathtub and sinks for missing or damaged caulk. Caulk keeps water from seeping behind the fixtures and causing damage. Over time, it can deteriorate and lose its effectiveness. Use a sharp knife to remove the old, damaged caulk before replacing it with a new bead. To make a straight line with your caulk gun, mask the area with masking tape before applying caulk.
Regularly Install a New HVAC Filter
Replace your home’s HVAC filter at least every 90 days. If you have somebody in the house with asthma or allergies or if you have pets, replace it every 30 days. The new filter will improve the unit’s efficiency and ensure your home has a constant supply of clean, allergen-free air.
DIY Home Maintenance: Fix Leaky Faucets
Fixing a leaky faucet is much easier than many people think. Typically it’s simply a matter of replacing a damaged rubber washer inside the faucet handle. Start by turning off the water supply to the faucet. Remove the handle and replace the faulty washer.
Repair a Running Toilet
Once you’ve successfully fixed a leaky faucet or two, you can try your hand at more advanced home maintenance tasks such as repairing the running toilet. To confirm the water is leaking from the tank into the bowl, put a drop or two of food coloring in the tank. Leave it for an hour. If the water in the bowl has turned the same color, there is indeed a leak. To solve this problem, replace the flapper inside the tank.
